Shoes

Brown University Gallery, 19**

A temple dedicated to work is in the center of the installation space.  Alters made out of women’s broken high heels adorn the walls.  Audio invites people to enter the temple with a mantra, “Work with us, come with us, play with us…” Inside the temple there is a golden dome and stained glass windows.  It smells of perfume.  The viewer enters the small door but can’t fully stand up in the space.  A glass ceiling blocks them and keeps them in a crouching position.

I created Shoes after spending a year in Nepal and India doing Tibetan studies and learning how to make Buddha sculptures. I was exploring the idea of work, worship, faith, and architecture as gendered.
